Monique and the Mango rains

This is a required reading for one of my cultural anthropology course. Interestingly, I really enjoyed this book. It is about the life of a young midwife, Monique, in a remote village named Nampossela, Mali. Even though Monique had only 9 months of medical training, she was very passion in educating her village healthcare knowledge relating to malaria, infant nutrition, pregnancy, birth control, etc. as well as helping them during childbirth. Eventually, she became a very respectful midwife not only in her village, but in the surrounding villages and nationwide.

**Well, I was amazed by how a person's passion can contribute so much to the society. Note that she is not even qualified as a skilled birth attendant because she had only 9 months of training. But she is passionate and she really put her passion into action. **

However, later she died during childbirth because of various reasons.

In this country of 90% Muslim, 1% Christian (and maybe a small percent of animist), people are suffering from the poor condition of life and biased cultural perspective. The infant and maternal mortality are very high. 12 out of 100 expectant mothers die. Not to mention about civil wars and other diseases.
